On a mission to change our current food systems
I was born in the United States in Nashville, but raised in Zambia, a country in Central Africa, where I lived until the age of 12.
Even though there was always enough food on our table, poverty and hunger were a piercing reality I witnessed first-hand growing up. Back in the day, I used to go to a rural orphanage with my mom, where we would feed about 200 kids every weekend. This, of course, taught me the importance of acts of service, gratitude, and not taking anything for granted.
I know it might sound like I’ve always been some kind of “hero”, but that couldn’t be far from true! In fact, I wasn’t always the positive and proactive woman I am today.
I used to be extremely lazy, I would lay in bed all day, looking at the ceiling, I was overweight and, to be honest, I didn’t have the healthiest habits...
Luckily, throughout my childhood, I also saw how my parents, two amazing self-made entrepreneurs, got to expand their business despite any circumstances.
To me, this was enough proof that if I set my mind to it, I could achieve anything with unwavering passion, hard work, and relentless determination, so I decided to make a change and take control of my life!
When I turned 15, I went back to the United States to complete my high school studies and pursue my university degree. Unsurprisingly, it was then and there when I first felt the biggest cultural shock., which made me have a wider perspective on certain difficulties.
While things in the Third World were already going from bad to worse, the first world had just started going through its first crisis. Going from rising prices to well-fed, yet malnourished, children. When you think about it, disaster seems inevitable.
Having experienced both the privileges of the first-world and the injustices of a third-world country had a strong impact on me. I can now say it played an important role when deciding what I wanted to do with my life:
I’ve realized most of today’s concerns worldwide share the same common denominator.
Low-quality foods that sicken us, prices that keep escalating, poor access to quality foods, chronic diseases on the rise, and many other issues are interconnected by a single factor: soil desertification.
I want to raise awareness about the impact this issue has on our daily lives, and, most importantly, teach farmers, investors, students, consumers, and basically, everyone and their mother that there are multiple solutions.
We have an opportunity to reverse this grueling and challenging situation and instead create a prosperous and healthy future for generations.
